Fall flat on your face

Literalmente esta frase implica caerse y golpearse la cara, pero en realidad tiene el significado de "fracasar en algo".
Don't blame me if you fall flat on your face!

Cambridge nos dice que además tiene una connotación de "embarrassing way".

The new scheme fell flat on its face in spite of all the financial support that was given.
It's always amusing to see a newscaster fall flat on his face.

Wooden Spoon

Esta frase hace referencia a un premio real o imaginario otorgado a un competidor que obtiene las más bajas calificaciones en su grupo o en su clase. El origen de wooden spoon viene de la costumbre de obsequiar con una cuchara de madera al alumno de la Universidad de Cambridge con tales calificaciones.
Never will you see John with the wooden spoon: Nunca se verá a John último.
Aparentemente es una expresión vieja, pero no está de más conocerla.

Cambridge nos trae el siguiente ejemplo:
For the second year running Ireland took the wooden spoon in the Rugby tournament.

The phrase Finder nos cuenta lo mismo pero en inglés: The wooden spoon was presented by custom at Cambridge to the last of the Junior Optimes, i.e. the lowest of those taking honours in the Mathematical Tripos; hence, this position in the examination, or the person who takes it. Also, in extended use, referring to the lowest of a list or set in other connexions.

Plain Clothes

Significa "Ropa de civil". I was with two plain clothes detectivs in a police car. Iba con dos detectives vestidos de civil en el patrullero.

Cambridge nos trae la misma definición en inglés y un ejemplo más: ordinary clothes worn by police when they are working. There were police in plain clothes in the crowd.

In two minds

Quiere decir: "Encontrarse sin saber qué hacer entre dos opciones". I'm in two minds whether to buy a bungalow or a yacht. Estoy indeciso si comprar una casa de campo o un yate.

Cambridge nos dice que se suele usar con whether y con about. Aquí sus dos ejemplos:
I was in two minds whether or not to come this morning.
Residents are of two minds about new traffic restrictions in the area. En este último ejemplo se lo puede traducir como "no saber qué decidir sobre".

Blogs: Esta chica cuenta sus desventuras amorosas y en un momento confiesa: "I’m in two minds."

Dog days of summer

La frase se refiere a los días más calurosos, como nos dice la Wikipedia. Cualquier período de tiempo en el verano cuando las cosas se alentizan se lo puede relacionar con la frase "dog days". El origen de esta frase viene del hecho de que durante los días más calurosos del año, los perros normalmente están tirados jadeando para mantener su temperatura corporal baja.
Acá hay un par de ejemplos:
The dog days of summer are usually bad for both business and sports.
The only thing she wants to do during the dog days of summer is go to the beach.
Everything slows down during the dog days of summer.

For Good

Significa "para siempre". I'll go to London for good: Me iré a Londres para siempre. I went to Madrid for a fortnight and I stayed there for good: Me fui a Madrid por 15 días y me quedé allá para siempre. La frase completa es "for good and all", pero como los ingleses siempre abrevian, la resumieron a simplemente "for good".
